Inspiring entrepreneurship: Insights from the Immigrant Business Expo – PembinaValleyOnline.com
The first Immigrant Business Expo in Morden this past Friday brought together a vibrant mix of community members, business leaders, and aspiring entrepreneurs.
Those in attendance were able to learn from a series of panelists, including keynote speaker Zahid Zehri – a seasoned entrepreneur and owner of the successful Shoppers Drug Mart in Winkler. In his speech, Zahid emphasized the importance of understanding the difference in Canadian culture when starting a business.
“In our country it is different, you don’t have to ask, and someone will come and help you. So, if I have a suit, someone will come and tell me ‘Zahid I don’t think this tie matches with your outfit’. I didn’t ask you. ‘You don’t have to; I was just telling you.’… Here you must ask for help… ‘Does this tie look good’, and then they will ask ‘Do you want the truth’? It’s a different culture.”
Building a Thriving Community
Zahid spoke on holding the Immigrant Business Expo near Winker and Morden, noting how they have become key areas for economic growth and expressed enthusiasm for initiatives that attract more immigrants to the area, which he believes will enhance the community’s potential.
“Many, many businesspeople are coming here, immigrant business entrepreneurs from other countries they have investments, they want to seek support, some help, some guidelines so they can open a new business. And I think this is right on time.”
Inclusive Opportunities
One of the central themes throughout the event was the Expo’s inclusivity, and Zahid spoke in response to some local business owners’ feelings of being excluded on social media. “Everyone is welcome… [the] Immigrant Business Expo is not only for the newcomers, or the new immigrants, it is for everyone.”
Zahid also mentioned the involvement of the local Chamber of Commerce, emphasizing that participation is open to all community members. Zahid’s message was clear: the Expo is an opportunity for all to learn and grow together.
Conclusion
The Immigrant Business Expo’s role in fostering inclusive community growth is filling a space that not everyone may have been aware needed filling, but as Morden, Winkler and the Pembina Valley welcome their newcomers, the Expo’s vision of a collaborative business landscape offers hope and opportunity for everyone.
