As climate change increasingly impacts our environment, the risk of water damage to homes is more prevalent than ever. With one in every six homes filing a water damage claim—averaging nearly CA$17,000 —the stakes for homeowners are high.
For brokers looking to provide exceptional service to their clients, understanding innovative risk prevention solutions is essential. Moen, a leader in smart water solutions, offers cutting-edge products that not only protect homes but also enhance the value brokers can provide.
In a recent interview with Insurance Business, Jerry Fairborn, (pictured), Moen’s national sales manager, commercial, discussed how the company’s smart water solutions can benefit your clients. By equipping homeowners with advanced tools, brokers can position themselves as trusted advisors in risk management.
The Moen Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff is a proven means to helping prevent water damage and leaks in the home. Attached to the main waterline, this device continually monitors for potential water abnormalities and will proactively shut off the water if a risk is identified.
“Since its launch, 60% of the people who have adopted the device have found a leak they didn’t know they had within 30 days,” highlighted Fairborn.
For clients living in flood-prone areas, brokers should emphasize the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding their homes during extreme weather events, especially considering the recent devastation caused by hurricanes like Helene and Milton.
The Moen Smart Sump Pump Monitor is a valuable addition to any risk management strategy. “Homeowners should retrofit their existing sump pumps to stay informed about their performance,” Fairborn advised. “This smart device alerts homeowners to potential failures, allowing them to address issues before they lead to catastrophic damage.”
Additionally, Moen Smart Leak Detectors provide an extra layer of protection by detecting moisture around water prone areas of the home, such as the basement, attic or near a dishwasher. Users will be alerted automatically of any moisture, extreme temperatures or high humidity. “For even further protection, there is also a 6ft Leak Sensing Cable with leak detection technology that can extend the area of water protection; up to three of these cables can be connected to provide protection in areas where potential leaks can occur,” noted Fairborn.
By offering these insights, brokers can enhance their client’s risk management strategies, reducing the reliance on insurance alone and fostering more well-rounded risk mitigation solutions.
So, how does Moen’s smart water technology work? Utilizing AI applications like machine learning, Moen’s Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff learns the unique water usage patterns of a home, detecting leaks as small as one drop per minute. “If the device detects an abnormality in usage or the beginnings of a catastrophic leak, it can intervene proactively, automatically shutting off the water supply to prevent damage,” Fairborn explained.
The device has shown itself to be extremely effective – to date, the Shutoff device has detected and alerted users to more than two million potential home water leaks.
Many homeowners remain unaware of the alarming frequency of water damage claims, which can result in costly and preventable damage to their properties. Brokers can play a crucial role in this education by taking the following steps:
- Highlight statistics: Share key statistics, such as one in six homes filing a water damage claim, to emphasize the need for proactive measures.
- Explain common causes: Educate clients on frequent causes of water damage, like burst pipes and flooding, and how seasonal changes can exacerbate these risks.
- Discuss preventative measures: Introduce innovative technologies, such as Moen’s Smart Water Network, and illustrate how these solutions can detect leaks early, significantly minimizing potential damage and safeguarding homeowners’ investments.
- Encourage regular inspections: Advise clients to regularly inspect their plumbing systems, appliances, and roofs for wear or leaks and to schedule routine maintenance to catch potential issues early.
- Promote insurance awareness: Ensure clients understand their coverage regarding water damage, discussing any limitations or exclusions so they know their responsibilities and protections.
